TEAS SESSIONS

These are facilitated share sessions of skills, ideas and concepts. These “workshop” sessions focus on the practical exchanges between teachers/trainers and youth participants. This model is based upon is the sharing of skills and knowledge conducted by FEDEC the European Federation of Professional Circus Schools (La Fédération européenne des écoles de cirque professionnelles) that has led to the development of the Basic Circus Arts Instruction Manual. Catapult tailors this model to suit the Australian youth circus and physical theatre movement.

Past sessions have included:
·   Theatricality & meaning
·   Aerial training
·   Slapstick and Clowning
·   Adagio
·   Safety, first aid and rigging
·   Manipulation

CATAPULT 2012- In 2012 we will have 12 x 2 hour “TEAS” sessions.

So far suggestions for TEAS sessions in 2012 are:

1.       Building performances.
2.       Aerial- introduction to aerial, trapeze, tissue, straps, net and lyra.
3.       Acro
4.       Slapstick and clowning
5.       Adagio Contact juggling
6.       Fire
7.       Globe
  1.   Rigging
Do you have any suggestions for the ‘TEAS’ sessions?

·         What have you thought of past ‘TEAS’ sessions?
·         What skills or ideas do you want to explore at Catapult in 2012?
·         Who do you think would be fantastic facilitators for one of these sessions and why?
·         What do you want to ‘TEAS’ out of other youth circus and physical theatre artists?

Let us know your thoughts on the Catapult TEAS sessions

  1. Hello - I think the idea of the tease sessions is great! There are always different techniques and methods to get to the same place. A bit of lateral thinking (Edward DeBono) could be great to help the ideas flow in some sessions and get us all talking in the same direction.

Lets get upside down with a handstand session.

What about a trampoline session? Anyone up for some bouncing?

  2. 2012 will be my first catapult and the tease sessons sound wonderful! 2 hours is an ideal amount of time. It might be nice to learn a new skill and then in the last 20mins, for groups to be given the opportunity to perform the skill or little scene they have devised in the session.

Something using masks might be interesting?
    How about stage combat?
    Human pyramids?
Can the session on clowning focus on characterisation, engagement and making a contract with the audience?

Acrodan - Yes Trampoline! Some of the second year Theatre/Media students devised some material using the tramp last month and they might be interested in having a play with others, teaching the skills they learnt and devising a short playful routine?

  3. How about a session on Viewpoints (Anne Bogarts training method) which is great for impulse work, spontaneity, play and creating a powerful emsemble spirit. Viewpoints has the ability to take an actor out of the realm of daily life movement and habits and into a heightened state of physical awareness and expression.

  4. Anonymous I agree i would definitely be interested in playing with some of the Viewpoints and other physical theatre training. Its a really interesting and helpful area of study for people in the area of theatremaking that this festival connects to.

  5. I know a mask-maker and performer who may be good for a mask workshop on Commedia, Basle as well as crazy fun character masks that he makes and sells. Are workshop presenters paid? If so how much? Are you having stalls such as the circus equipment one you have had before? What is the charge for the mask-maker to set up his stall? Are there forms somewhere for him to apply?

  6. Another person i know teaches Alexander technique which is quite relevant to Circus and Phys Theatre performers - it is a technique where you learn to do things with least effort (allow it to happen rather than force it to happen). It teaches relaxation, body awareness, core strength and even pain management! It would appeal to someone looking for fine tuning of their body and/or dealing with injuries. She could watch people and then work one on one to help them correct bad habits.

  7. Re TEAS - Circus Allsorts dont have access to much in the way of resources or apparatus. They are teenagers who come to Catapult to learn whatever techniques they can from anyone who will teach them and they love mingling with other such young people - the warmup games we did at the beginning of each day last time was excellent, as was the sharing session at the conclusion of the festival. Hope you keep them. From a supervisors point of view: please dont separate groups - we go to catapult promising to supervise our little treasures BUT cant do that if they are split up at different venues!
If you are doing the social night, please make it a bit more structured eg big games, performances, films etc Last time was fun for the kids but a bit chaotic.
